24 Hour Inclusive Design Challenge at Include 2011, 17-19 April 2011, sponsored by Sanctuary Care
Team HowKind
Team leader: Andy Turnbull (Checkland Kindleysides)
Design partner: Susan Griggs
The team's aim was to create an emotionally significant inclusive design proposal that maximised the positive attributes of old age to promote a healthier lifestyle, stimulate interaction and provide the perfect common ground for cross-communal activity in the setting of the park.
The Sociable Network is a series of pause points along a route through the park that are deliberately spaced to encourage walking and promote a 'rewarding' pause on arrival. The rewards inter-link with other users of the park (from mums and toddlers to older children).
There would be an area designed to promote conversation and the inherent wisdom older people can have. Another area would promote the idea of communally growing flowers, fruit and vegetables, while simultaneously offering exercise, while an additional area would be dedicated to 'play'. At each pause point, the team created a design language that is simple, elegant but practical.
