Catherine Greene

Background and Interests

A graduate from the National College of Art and Design in Dublin, Catherine moved to London to work for a British Telecom initiative, iOGlobal; a new media start-up being showcased by the Design Council. Here her experiences showed the value of design as a cross- and multi-disciplinary activity and demonstrated the power of design thinking as a tool for developing new business strategies and identifying new ideas. These experiences led her to develop her design experience through an MA at the Royal College of Art in Design Products.

Catherine started at the Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design as Research Associate working on EPSRC/AHRC funded project Welcoming Workplace. Since then her interest in workplace design and design research has led her to work on a variety of academic and commercially partnered projects ranging from those looking at new ways of working to others focusing on Inclusive Design. These include 'Space for Thought - Designing for knowledge Work' an industry collaboration with office furniture manufacturers Bene and 'Living Library' which examined the future potential of the academic library.

In her current role as Senior Associate Catherine plays a lead role in the Work & City Lab. This year she is working with Samsung Design Europe, looking at how mobile workers utilise technology in their daily life both for work and social purposes, and with Johnson Controls investigating how workplaces and workstyles can become more sustainable. Catherine is also part of a successful large AHRC/EPSRC funded project 'Media, Communities and the Creative Citizen' which will be led by Professpr Ian Hargreaves, University of Cardiff.
